THE ASSIGNMENT
You will draw 10 objects in contour lines from direct observation, this means no drawing from a screen of print. Draw what is around you, draw your world, and explore. For this project you should draw things in your home, your own hands, your friends, draw in the landscape (put on a warm coat), at the library, the mall, at a museum, to name a few. Take your sketchbook and push yourself to see the world more fully. This is an exercise in seeing as much as drawing. You will be graded on both the variety of objects and the quality of the drawings. Finally, you will redraw the best of the 10 with greater detail, you can combine more objects to make a still-life if you wish. See the above images as examples.

Step #1
  • Draw 10 separate objects in contour.
  • All drawings need to be on separate 8 x10 inch sheets of paper and each object should fill most of the drawing surface.
  • Drawings can be done in graphite or pen.
  • All drawings need to be in contour. This means no shading and no sketchy lines.

Step #2
  • Select the most interesting drawing out of the 10 drawn.
  • Redraw that object or small group of objects on a 18 x 24 inch sheet of paper.
  • This drawing should be done in felt-tip pens (such as microns).
  • You need to use a variety of pen tip sizes and consider the details and texture of the drawing.
  • The final drawing should be well considered with excellent craft and final presentation.
