ABSTRACTED WOOD
Students should note that this is a sample assignment. Instructors may alter its contents, and referring to the materials given directly by the instructor will always be the most accurate.
OBJECTIVES
- Investigate abstraction in art that is free from representational qualities in art.
- Gain experience designing a harmonious composition using the elements and principles of design.
- Gain experience constructing a sturdy 3-dimensional form in wood
- Determine strongest method of display (floor, pedestal, wall, hanging, etc.)
THE ASSIGNMENT
Students will create an abstract sculpture that engages 3-dimensional space using organic and geometric elements. Each project will incorporate found wood with processed dowel rods. The purpose of the assignment is to achieve balance between organic and geometric pieces using repetition and rhythm and engage positive and negative space.
Wood may be cut, combined, layered, and altered to activate specific areas. The relationship between the dowels and the found wood is to be determined by the artist. Projects should measure approximately 2ft X 2ft or larger. Students will use primarily dowels and wood glue to attach pieces, but hardware may be used as needed.
Other materials may also be combined as approved by the instructor. After finding your initial piece of wood, draw three developed sketches envisioning how you will add the dowel rods and other materials. Use your drawings to determine the best approach to your abstract sculpture.
