PATTERNS – Three Schemes
Students should note that this is a sample assignment. Instructors may alter its contents, and referring to the materials given directly by the instructor will always be the most accurate.
OBJECTIVES
- Gain a richer understanding of analogous, triadic & monochromatic color schemes.
- Gain a deeper understanding of realistic and abstract styles.
- Further understanding of original imagery.
- Explore pattern as a primary component in art making.
- Produce high crafted, hand generated & detailed design work.
- Practice developing our own content informed by appropriate imagery.
THE ASSIGNMENT
First read the essay/s associated with the semester’s theme, The Body. Then you will create three original patterns that based on your response to these readings and the theme in general. Please consider the related lecture on pattern and what it takes to make one that is successful and original. The patterns can be either representational or abstract. You should avoid cliché.
These patterned designs will then be translated into a composition using paint and three sperate color schemes: one monochromatic, one analogous, one triadic. Consider the lecture on color schemes and pick the schemes that best correspond with the composition’s pattern.
The final pieces must be completed on 12 x 12-inch bristol paper. You can use the assistance of software to create the patterns, but your final product needs to be completed by hand, first in pencil then in acrylic paint.
