THEME IN LINE / THREE-STEPS
Students should note that this is a sample assignment. Instructors may alter its contents, and referring to the materials given directly by the instructor will always be the most accurate.
OBJECTIVES
- Discover how to use line and marks in the development of original composition.
- Display balance in composition.
- Demonstrate an ability to work non-objectively.
- Develop methodologies for experimentation and process that will produce complex and original art forms.
- Display a high level of craftsmanship.
THE ASSIGNMENT
Step 1 – Bring three objects into the class that relates to the semester’s theme. For instance, if the theme is The Body. Bring these objects into class. As a class, pool all the theme related objects together in the room in a still-life arrangement that can be accessed in the round.
Step 2 – Responding to the objects through a series of 20, 2 x 2-inch drawings. You should use only black felt-tipped markers as you layer lines, contours, and marks discovered through observing objects you find compelling. Importantly, each small composition should look completely abstract (non-representational), with the original object rendered unrecognizable. You may choose to fill in areas with solid black marker, adding to the composition. Make sure to use exceptional craft. Your squares should be neatly cut, and your marks carefully considered. Create a 250-word visual analysis using related vocabulary as you consider the 20 small drawings. Do this for homework.
Step 3 – Pick the most compelling 2 x 2-inch drawing. Using exceptional craft and care replicate (scale-up) that drawing on the 8 x 8-inch wood panel supplied to you. To do so, follow these steps: gesso your panel, draw your design with light graphite marks, paint the design with black and white acrylic paint.
