DEEP SPACE / LANDSCAPE DRAWING
Students should note that this is a sample assignment. Instructors may alter its contents, and referring to the materials given directly by the instructor will always be the most accurate.

OBJECTIVES
  1. Gain knowledge and experience using atmospheric perspective (in B&W and color) through the use of drawing mediums.
  2. Learn how to describe deep space through B&W and color media.

THE ASSIGNMENT
For this drawing you will draw a landscape twice. First, you will draw it with B&W media (charcoal or graphite pencils) and then in color (chalk pastels or colored pencils). Importantly, you will pick a landscape that provides a good example of deep space and atmospheric perspective. This is easily achieved by choosing a view of the mountains, but other positions in nature that allow you to see long distances will achieve a similar effect.

Step #1
  • Draw the landscape using B&W media (charcoal or graphite pencils).
  • Pick a view that contains deep space and atmospheric perspective.
  • This drawing will be 8 x 10 inches, and acts as a study for the second in color.
  • The drawing should show shading, depth (using the rules of atmospheric perspective). This is not a contour line drawing.
  • You should complete this step in one drawing session.

Step #2
  • Draw the same view of the landscape but use color media (chalk pastels or colored pencils).
  • This drawing can be anywhere between 8 x 10 inches to 18 x 24 inches. If you are using colored pencils, it is suggested to keep the drawing on the smaller side.

VOCABULARY
  • Depth
  • Atmospheric Perspective
  • Value
