PAPER RELIEFS
Students should note that this is a sample assignment. Instructors may alter its contents, and referring to the materials given directly by the instructor will always be the most accurate.
OBJECTIVES
- Demonstrate ability to use line, texture, and light / shadow, to create a sense of visual movement.
- Become familiar with concepts of low and high relief, along with linear and planar forms.
THE ASSIGNMENT
This assignment will focus primarily on experimenting with paper to make a relief wall sculpture. A relief form is one that projects out three-dimensionally from a flat surface, such as a wall. In making your relief I want you to consider the properties of the paper in relation to how you can manipulate it. Paper can be folded, bent, crushed. It is easily cut, torn, shredded, burned, and pierced. Paper can be manipulated into three-dimensional forms in many ways: it can be piled up or layered, reassembled, or re-formed. Play with paper in many ways to evolve several forms. Consider combined multiple forms together creatively as you consider how your paper creations use, exist in, and interact with 3D SPACE! Please consider the following as you make your work.

Please consider the following as you make your work.
- How am I using line, texture, and light / shadow, to create a sense of visual movement throughout the forms?
- What can I “do” to the forms to enrich and heighten its visual appeal and interest?
- Is my work interesting from ALL points of view, not just the front view?
- How can I use light and shadow in my work in affective ways?
Follow these two steps:
- You MUST make at least two small experimental pieces. You can use up to three sheets of 8.5” x 11” white paper for each of the two experimental pieces you will create. They should be constructed in such a way that they can be pinned to the critique wall with push-pins. We will have an informal critique discussing the qualities of your experimental pieces.
